about

Young, up-and-coming jazz guitarist, composer and producer Emily Jane Roberts makes her eagerly awaited debut with 'The Persistence of Memory', taken from her upcoming EP of the same name.

Inspired by the sounds surrounding her in London's thriving young jazz scene, 'The Persistence of Memory' nods to Roberts' influences from the UK capital and rhythms from West Africa. Centred around a subtle, swung bembe rhythm, the track is soulful, uplifting and bounces along with a simmering energy. Featured vocalist Alice MC cuts across the arrangement with rhythmic sensibilities that bring Australia's future-soul vocal heavyweights Nai Palm and Allysha Joy to mind. The track also features powerful guitar and horn unison lines that emerge from a glistening soundscape before opening up into a sweeping melodic solo from Roberts.

"The lyrics of 'The Persistence of Memory' were written during lockdown, and refer to the famous Dalí painting; a desolate, strange landscape where time is meaningless and your imagination can provide an escape."

Emily Jane Roberts is a Guildhall School of Music alumni and semi-finalist of the BBC Young Jazz Musician awards 2020. After spending the last few years building her profile through session and pit work, the young guitarist is now ready to make her mark with the debut EP from her and her sextet.

lyrics

Lyrics

Time can be dust when your mind is the tide coming in
Why can’t we just stop, take a breath, hear the wind, brush your cheek and remember the time we forgot
Let me show you a watch of wax, wrap around, a lone forgotten
Branch, in a plane, of sand and trees where it melts and becomes a stream
Time can be dust when your mind Is the tide coming in
And I’m Waking up, falling down, falling down, on repeat and it’s always the same.

Hear my voice as a frozen breath
From a place where the skins we shed
Fall behind with the life we led
Fall behind, fall behind,
Fall behind with the life we led
